Born in 1904, Alfred James Higgs started his rugby at his native Blaenavon, turning professional with Oldham in 1925. He stayed there for five years, scoring 37 tries in 140 appearances. He joined Halifax and helped them to two Challenge Cup wins. He joined as a centre but later found success as a loose forward. He retired from rugby in 1935 but didn't return to Blaenavon until 1940 to go into business. In Halifax, he worked as a greengrocer.
