Born in Abercarn, he played for four South Wales clubs Abercarn, Ebbw Vale, Pontypool and Newbridge and played for Wales in unofficial war-time internationals. In 1945, he packed in his job as a miner in the Valleys to turn professional with Oldham. There he scored 35 tries in 119 games, before moving on to Leigh, where he made a further 118 appearances, and eventually becoming player-coach at Rochdale in 1952. He died in his adopted town of Oldham on March 7 2007 aged 89. His grandson Iestyn Harris eventually emulated his grandfather by playing rugby league and union for Wales.
