George Gummer started playing rugby at a young age for his local side, Bridgend, and then played for Pontypridd after moving there to work at the Maritime Coke Works. He had a Welsh rugby union trial in 1934, but no caps as he turned professional with Barrow in December of that year. He continued to play for Barrow during the war but did make a guest appearance for Wigan. He signed for Oldham after the war, making 42 appearances for them, scoring 16 tries, before moving to Rochdale Hornets where he was appointed captain. He died on June 15, 2002, aged 88.
