He turned professional with Wigan in 1979, making his debut on Boxing Day against St Helens, winning the first of his full Wales caps exactly a month later. He remained there until early in the 1980-81 season before being transferred to Huddersfield. He ended his professional career with 12 games for Bridgend Blue Dragons but four years later, went to Swansea University and played for their side between 1989 and 1993 and won caps for Wales Students. In 1992, he formed and organised the Tawe Dulais rugby league team that was in operation for three years. In 1995, he made a comeback in rugby union at the age of 39, playing for Abercraf and then Neath Athletic. A collier by trade, after finishing with Bridgend, Ness went to work in a foundry, before going back to work underground. From 1994 to 1998, he managed the community/leisure centre in Cwmllynfell while also working as a Welsh language tutor for adults. From 1999-2012 he was a teacher, working at Mountain Ash, Coed-y-Lan and Brecon High Schools.
