Dick Evans qualified for Wales due to his Welsh father and grandparents (his Nain a Taid). Dick lost his father when he was just five, so playing for Wales was something that Dick always wanted to do for him. Dick came through the junior rugby league system with St Helens schools and played three games for their A team before signing first team forms with Liverpool City (Huyton RLFC). He moved to Barrow and stayed there for two seasons, where he was Player of the Year in his first. He then made his name at Swinton, where he appeared 195 times at hooker and was eventually being named in their 1970s Team of the Decade. When with Swinton, he was the first person to score a one-point drop-goal in the UK. Swinton were 1-0 up versus New Zealand, that was the first ever 1-0 lead in UK rugby league. He represented Lancashire between 1972 and 1974 and was a World Cup tourist with Wales in 1975. He finished his career at Salford retiring in 1978 aged 33. His final rugby league match was a Wales v England international in Swansea, played at the end of the 1977-78 season. After playing, he had a short stint as a coach in the 1980s with local amateur club Formby RLFC before making a coaching come-back in 1996 for a season with Clockface RLFC. He was also a keen five-a-side footballer and coached the 11-a-side works team for three years when working at Pilkington's in St Helens. Dick was a motor mechanic by trade, which he did from school during his rugby league career. He went on to work at Triplex Safety Glass, Fibre Glass for Reinforcements and Nippon Glass Fibres, working on the engineering side of each company. He retired in 2005 and still lives in Billinge.
