An excellent community rugby league player with Cardiff Demons and then Aberavon Fighting Irish, Neil's form for them was enough to earn himself a call up for the full Wales side in 2004 and 2005, after winning caps with both Wales Dragonhearts and Wales Students earlier in those years, becoming the only player to win Welsh honours with three sides in consecutive years. His 2005 students caps were in Australia in that year's Student World Cup. He had a trial with Celtic Crusaders but didn't make the first team, so returned to rugby union with his native Narberth side.
