John Aubrey Casewell was brought up in the Manchester area and came to the attention of Salford when he attended their public trials. He made his debut in 1928, but he surprised the club and their supporters when in 1929 he decided to join the police force, which meant he had to retire from the game. This lasted for two years. He returned in 1931 and stayed with the club until 1935. During this time, he won a Championship and three Lancashire League medals. After making 187 appearances for Salford and scoring 63 tries, he signed for Leeds in 1935 and immediately helped them to win the Yorkshire League title. In 1935–36 Leeds won the Yorkshire Cup after beating York and six months later the Challenge Cup against Warrington at Wembley. This gave him an honour, shared only by four other players, of winning "all six cups" during their career, one other being fellow Wales international Alan Edwards. He stayed at Leeds for another season and won another Yorkshire League title. In August 1937, after 80 appearances and 12 tries for Leeds, he joined Halifax and later moved to Keighley and Hunslet. When he retired from playing, he coached Featherstone Rovers for a season and later became secretary of the Leeds and District Rugby League, while working at the Hunslet Engine Company. He lived in Leeds until he died on May 26th 1974.
