Born in 1882, Dai Beynon played in the first rugby league match to ever take place in Wales in Merthyr on September 7 1907, but not for the Welsh side. He was instead making his Oldham debut after signing from Pontypool in the close season, playing for them 49 times over two seasons and scoring 16 tries. He started his rugby at his local side Ebbw Vale before joining Brynmawr in 1903 who he helped to second place in the Monmouthshire League. After two seasons there, he transferred to Pontypool and represented Monmouthshire County. He won his only cap in Wales' first ever match.
