Although Welsh-born, Stephen Ray played his club rugby union for Bath before turning professional with Wakefield Trinity in 1928. He played 93 times in three years for that club, scoring 53 tries, and was then bought by Warrington. There, he was an even bigger success. He scored 45 times in 64 games, 33 of the tries in 1932-33 where he set the club's "Most Tries in a Season" record, which was subsequently broken by Brian Bevan. A further move happened in 1934, when he spent a brief time at Oldham, scoring eight tries in 18 games.
