Dave Clark moved to Australia with his family as a youngster and was brought up playing rugby league. Starting out with Burleigh Bears, he played in the ARL for South Queensland Crushers. After the Crushers were wound up as a victim of the Super League War in Australia, Dave was given a chance to move to England with Barrow Raiders, and he settled in Cumbria permanently. He had many good years as a player at Barrow, turning out 136 times, playing twice for Wales in 2004, before taking over as head coach in 2007. He actually coached the club in three different spells, in addition to having academy roles at Wigan Warriors. During his time as Barrow coach, he led them to promotion to the Championship in 2009, then into the final of the Northern Rail Cup, only to lose to Widnes 18-34. However, his side won the Championship Grand Final, beating Halifax 26-18 at Warrington but they were denied promotion to Super League because of the quality of their ground. He went back to his roots in 2012, moving to Cardiff and becoming head coach of South Wales Scorpions, spending two years at the club, whilst also working with Wales Rugby League and Wigan Warriors as part of a deal struck by the three organisations at the time. He returned to Cumbria in 2014, leading the Rugby Football League Cumbria Academy. Going back into the pro leagues in 2017, he coached Workington Town for a season then going back into the community game, coaching Askam. In 2021 at the age of 50, he put on his boots again and turned out for community side Ulverston.
