Francis John Shugars not only won Welsh caps but he also won one cap for Great Britain, against New Zealand, playing on the first ever Lions tour. He also played in 11 of the tour games in Australia and New Zealand. He was Warrington's first player to become a Great Britain tourist. He also made two appearances for Lancashire and one for Other Nationalities. Playing for Penygraig initially, he turned professional with the Wire in 1904, playing there for eight years, scoring 18 tries in 212 games. He was eventually inducted into the club's hall of fame. At the end of his first season he was in the Warrington side who won the Challenge Cup for the first time, defeating Hull Kingston Rovers 6-0. He collected a further Challenge Cup winners’ medal in 1907, helping Warrington to defeat Oldham, 17-3. His best season scoring wise was 1909/10 when he crossed for seven tries. He remained in Warrington and died in the town in 1953 aged 77.
