Frank H Young, commonly known as "Bucket" due to his ability to deal with high kicks, not only played twice for Wales but was a capped Great Britain international in 1909 and a tourist in the first Lions tour of 1910. He played in two games in Australia on that tour, including the first, which was against New South Wales. However in his second game, the Lions' fourth of the tour, which was against Metropolis in Sydney, Frank was badly injured and failed to properly recover forcing his retirement, aged just 25 a year later. While still a teenager, Frank was playing for Cardiff RFC. He stayed with the club until 1905, having won county honours and was also a reserve for the Wales team. He also won county honours with Middlesex after moving to the area for a spell for work and being spotted while with London Welsh. After a disagreement with Cardiff, he moved to Tredegar, then turned professional with Leeds in January 1906. He had initially turned down Oldham and Wigan. The 1909-10 season proved to be his best. He made his Wales and Great Britain debuts and also helped Leeds to win the Challenge Cup. After his early retirement, Frank moved back to Wales and tried to help Leeds whenever he could by recommending players to them. They took up his recommendation of Ivor Jones in 1914 but not that of Gus Risman in 1927. He died in Cardiff in 1941.
