William Stuart Prosser won one cap for Great Britain, and what a famous cap it was. Going on the 1914 Great Britain Lions tour of Australia and New Zealand, he played in the memorable "Rorke's Drift" Test match against Australia in which England had only 10 players for the last half-hour but won the game 14-6 and The Ashes as a result. Born in Abertillery in 1887, the son of a coal hewer, Stuart also worked in the mines. At a young age, he made a name for himself playing for Pontypool RFC. He also was capped for Monmouth County on 15 occasions. He was spotted by Halifax officials and turned professional in 1912. After serving during the First World War, he continued to play for Halifax until a shoulder injury ended his career after the conclusion of the 1923–24 season. He later lived in Sowerby Bridge for many years but died at aged 47 on March 12, 1939 after being ill for two years.
