Eddie Caswell started his rugby career in school where he became a Welsh schoolboy international in 1907. A miner by trade, he played for local side Cefn Cribbwr at first, he joined Bridgend in 1913. However the War put a temporary halt to his rugby career and he joined the Glamorgan Horse Artillery as a driver, soon finding himself in France, serving throughout from 1914-18. During this time, he captained the Territorials Royal Artillery rugby union side. Leaving the Army, Caswell signed for Cardiff and showed his prowess as an excellent schoolboy sprinter. It was said that he was heading for Welsh international honours, but he turned professional with Hull FC. In his first season with Hull in 1919-20, he played 17 matches and scored five tries, helping them to win the League Championship for the first time. The following season he played in 41 matches scoring 12 tries and Hull winning the League for a second time. He also picked up a Yorkshire Cup winners medal and won a County Cap with Glamorgan. Eventually he played 401 matches, scoring 98 tries and five goals and was a coach at Hull between 1931 and 1946. It's often said a player would die for a club - Eddie was a Hull FC man and it was when he was visiting the secretary's office on Sunday 21 May 1949 that he suddenly collapsed and died, he was just 54 years of age.
