Gareth Dean started his rugby league career with Cardiff Demons in 1998, playing alongside future Lions rugby union star Gethin Jenkins. There he helped them to promotion from Academy Division Two and played in that year's Grand Final. From there he was snapped by Wigan Warriors after being spotted by scout Jackie Edwards, Shaun’s father, but didn't ever make a first team appearance and was instead loaned out to Wigan St Patricks during his time up north. He later played for London Broncos and Workington Town before returning to Wales and playing for Celtic Crusaders. There, he scored four tries in 61 appearances and helped them to two successive promotions from League 2 up to Super League. In 2009, he moved to France, where he settled in Carcassonne, playing for the club and managing a local bar. In 2018, he was still turning out for Val de Dagne in French National Division 2.
