Byron Smith was brought up in Halfiax, playing junior rugby league in the area with Siddal before playing in Super League for his home-town club in 2003, making seven appearances. He transferred to Castleford Tigers in 2004, making nine more appearances at the top level, but was unable to stop them from being relegated. He was a regular in 2005 as he helped them to get promoted back to Super League via the play-offs but was released as rejoined Halifax for 2006. A year with Rochdale Hornets followed in 2007 before moving to Batley Bulldogs and helped them to a National League Cup Final win in 2010. John Kear took over as head coach of Batley in 2011 and when he was also back in charge of Wales in 2014, Kear made sure that Smith was involved again after seven years in the international wilderness. After 187 appearances for Batley, he moved to local rivals Dewsbury Rams for his final professional season in 2015. His total career club appearances totaled 293, scoring 13 tries. He later returned to Siddal to play in the community game.
