Daio Powell spent just six seasons in professional rugby league with his career blighted by injury and tragedy. He was successful at the start of his career, making 18 appearances for Wakefield Trinity in the 1994-95 season with the hope of playing for Wales in the 1995 World Cup. However a move to Perth Western Reds ended in tragedy as he faced a lengthy spell in jail in Australia after man died following a fight with Daio outside a nightclub in Perth. He'd made his Reds debut at the end of the 1995 ARL season but played no other games due to this. After being found not guilty, he returned to Wakefield and played four more games in their inaugural Super League season in 1996. A move to Halifax followed and he played the 1997 and 1998 seasons with them, scoring 18 tries in 42 games. He spent much of the 1999 season with Sheffield Eagles, picking up an injury midway through the season that kept him out for over a year. He returned to professional RL in 2001 playing eight games for Keighley Cougars.
