Kelvin Skerrett became Wales' 36th first class captain when he led us in a non-test match against Emerging England in 1998, the last of his six Wales appearances. His five full Wales caps were all in the successful 1995 year where he was part of our European Championship winning side before playing in all three Rugby League World Cup matches. He also won 16 Great Britain caps and was a Lions tourist to Australia in 1992. Later that year, he played for GB in the World Cup Final loss to Australia at Wembley Stadium. Kelvin qualified to play for Wales through his grandmother, with the grandparents rule in rugby league only being introduced in late 1994, this itself being a proposal by then Wales coach Clive Griffiths. His trip to Cardiff to help Wales beat England on his Welsh debut wasn't his first visit to the area. In 1978, he made the long car trip from Leeds to Swansea to watch his uncle Trevor Skerrett, himself an eventual Welsh captain, make his Wales debut against the touring Kangaroos.
Starting at Hunslet in 1984, Kelvin moved to the Big League with Bradford Northern in 1987, picking up Yorkshire Cup winners medals that year and in 1989. After a brief spell at Western Suburbs Magpies in Sydney, he moved to Wigan where he spent seven successful seasons, making a mammoth 176 appearances and scoring 21 tries. There he won everything - League Championship, Challenge Cup, World Club Challenge, Regal Trophy, Lancashire Cup, Charity Shield and Premiership, his final match being the 1996 Premiership win over Super League champions St Helens at Old Trafford - from 1998, this would be classed as the Super League Grand Final. By that time, he was no longer a regular at Wigan, only making nine Super League appearances in the competition's inaugural season, eight of which were off the bench. So he moved to Halifax Blue Sox where he made a further 37 Super League appearances in three seasons. After playing, Kelvin coached at Oulton Rangers and his original side Methley Royals.
