John David Evans was Wales' 21st captain, leading us in the final three of his ten Wales caps. He also won four caps for Great Britain. Originally with his local club, Senghenydd RFC in Caerphilly, he moved to Newport RFC in 1947, scoring nine tries and kicking two conversions in 39 games before turning professional with Hunslet. Originally a fly-half, he eventually altered between that position and centre for Newport, utilising the latter nicely at Hunslet, using his natural speed a lot more in the open play of rugby league. He was later turned into a fullback and he went on to represent Wales and Great Britain in that position. He ended up with 23 tries and 93 goals in 256 appearances for Hunslet, leaving in the summer of 1956 to work in London at the ministry of works. He would have made more appearances had he not suffered a broken leg during his first season there. He did return to the north, and to Hunslet RLFC in 1957, and took over as player coach for their A side until 1960, turning out at loose forward. He died in West Sussex in late 1993 aged 71.
