Jack Beames, who was born in Aberbeeg, originally played rugby union for Newport RFC, his most notable match being the club's victory over the touring South African team in 1912. In the 1912/13 season at Newport he played in 38 games scoring a single try. He turned professional with Halifax in 1913 and played 149 times for the club, scoring 30 tries. In addition to his Welsh caps, he played for Other Nationalities in the Welsh international that never was, plus won two caps for Great Britain. He later made appearances for Bradford Northern but remained in Halifax and is in their Hall of Fame. He died in Halifax in 1970 aged 80.
