Whilst at Swansea RFC, Stuart Ferguson represented Wales on the 1968 Wales rugby union tour of Argentina. No caps were awarded at the time, but he was later awarded a Welsh Rugby Union President's cap. He turned professional with Leigh in 1969 and became a dual code international. He'd played 178 times for Swansea, scoring 28 tries and kicking 164 conversions, 157 penalties and 2 drop goals totalling 889 points, so he arrived at Leigh with a fantastic reputation, which he built on, helping them to win three cups in as many years. He scored three goals in their 11–6 victory over Wigan in the 1969 BBC2 Floodlit Trophy Final. He then kicked two goals in their 7–4 victory over St. Helens in the 1970 Lancashire County Cup Final. Finally, he helped Leigh to the big one - a 24–7 victory over Leeds in the 1971 Challenge Cup Final. The final two were in the same season - 1970-71, where he scored in all of Leigh's matches, the only other Welshman to score in all of his club's matches in a season is David Watkins at Salford.
