Eiryn Gwynne Davies played three times each for the Welsh rugby union and rugby league international sides, becoming a dual code international. He also toured Australia and New Zealand with the 1936 Great Britain Lions side, but didn't ever play in a GB test. Starting off in local rugby union with Kenfig Hill, he moved to Cheltenham for work purposes and ended up playing for their local side. He eventually transferred to Gloucester before moving back to Wales and playing for Cardiff. It was when in the capital that he won his Welsh RU caps. He turned professional in 1930 and ended up playing 300 times for Wigan, scoring 127 tries. He won a Championship medal in 1934, scoring a try in the Final against Salford. He also won a Lancashire Cup medal in 1938, that final also being against Salford. He remained in Wigan and died in the town on 14 July 1992, aged 84. However he left a legacy in his non Welsh qualified great-grandson Tom Davies, who made his Wigan debut in 2017 before eventually helping Catalans Dragons to the 2021 Super League Leaders Shield and playing for England.
