Dave Williams played for the Wales men's side on their tour of the USA in 1995. Before that, most of his rugby league was in the student game. He turned out for South Glamorgan Institute before it became UWIC, from 1987 to 1992. He played for Wales Students when coached by Clive Griffiths and Danny Sheehy and played in the World Cup in 1992. He was also selected for Great Britain students in 1990. He continued his rugby league with the  Cardiff Sea Eagles community side, from 1992 to 1995 and was selected for Wales on the back of that, alongside Gareth Davies, another wales student international at the time. He played professional rugby league in 1996 for South Wales, making five appearances. In rugby union, he started with his hometown club Dunvant, as well as turning out for Penarth and Treorchy.
