David Morgan Evans began in the rugby union code with Glynneath. He joined Neath in 1933-34 and quickly established himself as a hard-working, mobile prop forward in the best traditions of the club as Neath stormed to the first of two successive Welsh championships in which 'D.M.' was a key man. As a regular choice for the Welsh All Blacks, he earned a Welsh trial in just his second season in 1934. He was in the Neath-Aberavon pack which gave New Zealand a torrid time in 1935 but he then changed rugby codes, turning professional with Huddersfield over Christmas 1935. David played rugby league for Wales Rugby League in 1936-37 in three wins against England, France and a Rugby League XIII. He was also in the Huddersfield side that beat Hull 18-10 in the 1938 Yorkshire Cup Final. When World War II broke out, David joined the Royal Navy as a stoker 2nd Class. Sadly on Saturday 24 May 1941, the HMS Hood was sunk in the Battle of the Denmark Strait by the German battleship Bismarck and he died on board aged 30. David was married. He and his wife had one child, a daughter. He never saw his daughter as she was born on the very day he died.
