Lee Briers became Wales' 40th captain when he led us against New Zealand in Cardiff in 2002. He went on to captain Wales a further 12 times, in every other game he played for us, right up until his retirement from international rugby league following the 2011 Four Nations. After Jim Sullivan and Iestyn Harris, he's the only other player to have scored 100 points for Wales, accomplishing this feat in his final match, which was against Australia in Wrexham. In addition to his 23 Wales appearances, he played just the once for Great Britain, which was against France in their 42-12 win in October 2001. Lee started his career with hometown club St. Helens, and he made his début in 1997 at the age of 18, standing in for suspended captain Bobbie Goulding. He made six appearances for the club, scoring one try and 24 goals, with his performances helping Saints to reach the 1997 Challenge Cup Final. Seeking regular first-team football, he joined Warrington Wolves in April 1997 for £65,000. He made an instant impact at his new club and he was nominated for Young Player of the Year in his first season at Wilderspool Stadium. He was named as Warrington captain in 2003, holding that position for five seasons and was awarded a testimonial match in 2007. He won a Challenge Cup medal, his first honour with the Wolves, in 2010 before having a phenominal 2011 season - during the campaign, he broke a number of club records including top all-time points scorer, having overtaken club greats Brian Bevan, and Steve Hesford. He broke the record during a Challenge Cup home 112–0 demolition of Swinton. This match also saw Briers break his own club record for points in a match (set 11 years earlier against York), with 44 points, from 16 goals and three tries. He played in the 2012 Challenge Cup Final victory over Leeds Rhinos and also in the Super League Grand Final defeat to the same opposition later that year. He kicked his 1,000th career goal in 2013 before playing in another Super League Grand Final defeat later that year, this time against Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford. That was last professional game before he retired due to a neck injury. In total, he played 425 games for Warrington, scoring a club record 2,586 points. He joined the club's coaching staff ahead of the 2014 season.
