Gomer Hughes, along with Harold Thomas, became the first players to play rugby union for Wales, then league, then union again, although their return matches were unofficial "victory" matches following World War II and were never officially recognised as test matches. In the first of his Welsh caps in rugby league, he starred in the first ever European Championship match. Starting off in rugby union with Tonmawr, he moved to Cardiff and played for Penarth. After turning out for Wales in rugby union, he went on the Crawshays tour of 1934. He turned professional with Swinton later that year and apart from his return to Wales during war time, where he turned out for Neath as a guest player, he remained in the Greater Manchester area after retirement, dying in Salford on 14 November 1974, aged 64.
