William Paul Moriarty played in both the 1995 and 2000 Rugby League World Cups for Wales, the latter whilst playing for Swansea RFC - he was called into the Wales RL squad due a shortage of players in his position and played in the knockout stages. He was also part of the Wales RL squad who won the European Championship in 1995 and won two Great Britain caps. He became Wales' 35th captain in 1996 when he skippered us against England at Cardiff Arms Park. Starting off in rugby union with his local side Morriston, Paul soon transferred to Swansea and won 21 caps for Wales RU, playing in the rugby union's inaugural World Cup in 1987, scoring a try in the 22–21 third place play-off victory over Australia. He also spent a short period of time playing rugby union in Sydney for Western Suburbs. He turned professional with Widnes in 1988 and won League Championship and World Club Challenge medals as part of his 92 appearances where he scored 18 tries and kicked five goals. He later transferred to Halifax and also played five games on loan at Division Two club South Wales RLFC in that club's loan season in 1996. He returned to Swansea RFC after rugby union became openly professional and ended up playing exactly 300 games for the club, helping them to 200 wins and scoring 113 tries in the process. He became head coach of Swansea in 2001 and when the regions were formed in 2003, he transferred his services further west becoming forwards coach of the Scarlets in Llanelli. He was later head coach at Cardiff RFC before taking assistant roles at Newcastle Falcons and Gloucester. His brother Richard and son Ross have also both played rugby union for Wales.
